Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
